Resourcing the Future with Innovation

Topdrill introduces the Instagrid One, delivering outstanding benefits.

This case study showcases how cutting-edge technology is enhancing field service efficiency, reducing our environmental footprint, and setting new standards in innovation.

At Topdrill, our mission is clear: to resource the future by delivering innovative, safe, and efficient solutions that exceed client expectations. In an industry where environmental impact and operational efficiency are critical, our partnership with APS and the integration of the Instagrid One into our operations marks a transformative step forward.

The Challenge:

Operating across Western Australia’s remote and rugged terrains demands reliable, versatile, and efficient equipment. Traditionally, our mechanical fitters relied on diesel-powered generators, which presented several challenges.

These factors highlighted the need for a more responsible and efficient solution.

  • High fuel consumption: Resulting in elevated operational costs.
  • Increased vehicle emissions: Due to towing heavy equipment across vast distances.
  • Noise pollution: Affecting both workers and sensitive environments.
  • Ongoing maintenance requirements: Leading to downtime and added expenses.
The Solution:

In late 2024, the Topdrill team explored the potential of the Instagrid One during an APS demonstration. Supplied to one of our mechanical fitter’s service vehicles, this portable battery proved to be a game-changer.

Weighing only 20kg—20 times lighter than a traditional generator—the Instagrid One powered high-amperage stick welding, recharged 12V and 8V batteries, and even supported a Starlink unit for an entire day. David’s firsthand report showcased the device’s impressive performance, leading to its official integration into our operations.

David Hope, from the Topdrill team, described it as:

“A game-changing unit for field service, enabling me to eliminate the need for a trailerised diesel generator.”

Impacts and Benefits:
  • $12,520 savings over the Instagrid One’s lifespan: Achieved by eliminating generator servicing and refuelling expenses.
  • Zero operating costs: No need for servicing, filters, or routine maintenance, reducing ongoing expenses.
  • Less fuel consumption: The elimination of one-tonne generators reduces fuel usage and vehicle wear and tear.
  • Increased vehicle space: The compact design frees up storage, allowing fitters to carry more tools and equipment.
  • Reduced downtime: No refuelling or fuel transport is required, enabling fitters to focus on core tasks.
  • Lightweight and portable: Weighing just 20kg, it reduces physical strain and improves job site mobility.
  • 20,448kg reduction in emissions: A significant decrease in greenhouse gases compared to traditional diesel generators.
  • Zero emissions and noise pollution: Promotes a healthier, quieter work environment, particularly in sensitive areas.
  • Lower vehicle emissions: Reduced towing requirements lead to fewer emissions from light vehicles.
  • Reduced fuel handling risks: Eliminating the need for jerry cans and fuel storage minimises potential hazards.
  • Quieter operation: Enhances communication on-site, reducing the risk of potential incidents.
  • Improved ergonomics: Lightweight design reduces the risk of potential manual handling injuries.
A Future-Focused Partnership:

Topdrill’s adoption of the Instagrid One is more than just an operational upgrade; it’s a testament to our commitment to innovation and safety. This collaboration with APS reflects our dedication to continuously engaging technologies that align with our mission to deliver beyond client expectations while minimising our environmental impact.

“The Instagrid One has transformed the way we approach field service. It’s not just about efficiency; it’s about setting new benchmarks for safety and responsibility in our industry.”

Matt Liveris, Maintenance Manager, Topdrill.

Looking Ahead:

As we integrate more solutions like the Instagrid One into our fleet, we anticipate even greater advancements in efficiency and safety.

Our future plans include:

  • Expanding deployment across all service vehicles for maximum impact.
  • Exploring new technologies that complement our goals.
  • Strengthening partnerships with innovative suppliers like APS to stay at the forefront of industry advancements.

Together with APS and Instagrid, Topdrill isn’t just drilling into the earth—we’re drilling into the future.
