OVERVIEW
At Topdrill, innovation lives in every decision we make to keep our crews safe and productive.
Building on safety principles long established in RC drilling, Topdrill engineered the application of hands-free rod handling for diamond drilling in 2014.
This adaptation represented a significant step forward in eliminating high-risk manual tasks within a more complex drilling environment. By removing personnel from the line of fire and automating one of the most hazardous processes, Topdrill reinforced its commitment to engineered safety solutions and continuous improvement across its fleet.
The Challenge:
Traditional rod handling relies heavily on manual processes. These methods expose drillers and offsiders to risks, including injuries from dropped rods, entanglement hazards, and fatigue from repetitive manual handling.
- In high-tempo drilling environments, these risks compound quickly. Fatigue builds. Reaction time slows. The margin for error narrows.
- Topdrill identified rod handling as a critical risk area requiring not just procedural controls, but a fundamental redesign of the task itself.
The Solution:
Rather than modifying existing methods, Topdrill eliminated them.
Hands-free rod handling technology was engineered and deployed across our diamond and RC drilling fleets using Sandvik rod handlers. This removed the need for winches, haul plugs, and manual rod engagement entirely.
This approach takes the driller and offsider away from rotating parts with a hands-off steel approach.
Key features of the system include:
- True hands-free handling of drill rods across multiple rod sizes
- Side-mounted rod storage allowing for a smaller drill pad footprint and reduced earthworks
- Energised cup design to maintain positive engagement and significantly reduce the risk of dropped rods
- Fully standardised operating process across all rigs

The Outcome
The impact was immediate and measurable.
Crews now operate with greater confidence and improved ergonomics, while clients benefit from safer and more efficient drilling operations.
By removing manual rod handling from the task, Topdrill has:
- Removed manual lifting and repetitive strain risks
- Reduced fatigue-related incidents
- Created a consistent, standardised, and safer operating method across the fleet
Innovation in Action
Hands-free rod handling is more than a mechanical upgrade. It reflects how Topdrill approaches innovation.
We do not wait for incidents to force change. We invest early, engineer deliberately, and implement at scale. From rod handlers to live rig monitoring and digital safety platforms, every improvement is designed to remove people from harm while improving performance.
Looking Ahead:
As drilling programs become deeper, more efficient, and more complex, the need for engineered safety solutions will only grow.
Hands-free rod handling is one step in a larger journey toward a future where safety is built into every piece of equipment, and not reliant on human proximity to risk.
At Topdrill, innovation isn’t about the next idea. It is about building a safer industry, one engineered solution at a time.
